Live Review :: The Maccabees :: Alexandra Palace, London - Jul 1 2017
Live
The Maccabees
Alexandra Palace, London
July 1 2017
Words: Izzy B
So, The Maccabees are no more, but playing their last (and third) show in the majestic setting of Alexandra Palace, they could not have gone out in finer style. The south London five-piece made sure that for this final gig, they were going to make it one to remember.
Guests Mystery Jets, Jamie T and Jack Peñate helped them bring to an end their 13-year career on a 22-song set, which included a four-number encore. Opening on the title track to their second album 'Wall of Arms', the stage was set, literally, with a riot of lights and effects that saw them take in songs from all of their four albums from 2007's 'Colour It In' through to 'Marks To Prove It' which was released two years ago.
'Precious Time', 'Can You Give It' and 'Spit It Out' all sound better, and more poignant, than ever before as the lyrics are sung back by the capacity crowd. As a rousing close to the part of their set, the band bring out farewell tour supports Mystery Jets and Jack Peñate to join them on the soaring ‘Something Like Happiness', which was very much the feeling being shared by those on stage as much as off.
Vocalist Orlando Weeks and guitarist Felix White appeared at times to be almost overcome by the strength of the response as they return for their mammoth last hurrah encore. Cheers go up as Jamie T joins them for 'Marks to Prove It', and the crowd rarely let up through 'First Love', and 'Toothpaste Kisses', and as a confetti shower cascades down from above, close on their last ever live song, fan favourite ‘Pelican’ brings to an end The Maccabees illustrious career, gone but not to be forgotten.
