Introducing / Track Of The Day :: The Meeks - A Modern State

Coming to emerging Norwich quintet The Meeks this week it was hard to decide whether they should be an 'Introducing' feature, an EP review, or what we eventually decided on, a semi-combination of the two, with the emphasis on one of their just-released record's tracks, 'A Modern State' as Track Of The Day.

Celebrating their one-year anniversary after forming on this day last year, the band put out their debut EP 'Pieces' along with first single, 'Cinderella', last November. Their follow-up four-song EP, titled 'Just In A Modern State', was released on August 10 and marks the not at all shabby second extended play offering from the five alt-rock 18-year-olds. Although the six-minute closer was a highlight for us, it was a close run thing between that and opener 'Detrimental' and 'Park Slides'- catch both further down.



'A Modern State' won over for its vocal component supplied by Matt Williamson on this track (the aforementioned 'Detrimental' and 'Park Slides' both see Jack Fisher on lead - differing styles as you can hear) that comes in on just the right note amidst the more rocky rhythms and driving bassline and drums (with a synth bonus by Tom Joy, a session musician). A bit early in The Meeks' career to have a big-stage-ready anthem, but this has all the makings of being just that.

Check them out this evening (August 12) at the Norwich Banking Hall for the OPEN Takeover. They also play the Owl Sanctuary, Norwich on September 1.
