Sampha walks away with Mercury Prize 2017

Words: Ellie Ward

He was up against heavyweights like Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, The xx and Alt-J, and bookies' favourite Glass Animals, but tonight alt-R&B/electronic artist Sampha Sisay was the man who beat all 11 other nominees to win the 2017 Hyundai Mercury Prize for his debut album 'Process'.

The 10 track 'Process' was released in February on Young Turks label, and was co-produced by Sampha and Scottish music producer Rodaidh McDonald. It follows the south London singer-songwriter's collaborations with Solange, Drake, Kanye West, and Jessie Ware, amongst others.

Collecting the prize from actor Idris Elba, Sampha said he felt "like I'm dreaming. This is incredible."
