Best new tracks Down Under #14
With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
TEEN ANGST - ADRIAN
Following last year's 'Bookshop Boy'/'So You Say', the Perth-based four-piece get it all done in 85 seconds on this new track of chugging guitars, and Michelle Yeong's snappy, bgsrsge pop vocals. "'Adrian' was written just over a year ago when I was in a long-distance relationship," says Yeong. "Fuelled by late night video chats and recurring Buffy The Vampire Slayer screenings, 'Adrian' is a snapshot into lonely sleepless nights."
LEOPARD LAKE - FURTHER
Also from Perth, this duo - vocalist Storm Wyness (Sex Panther) and producer Sam Ford (POND, Abbe May) - are back with their second single. Atmospheric electro-pop with percussive sway and sweet coated, melodic vocals.
CANDY GUTS - GO AWAY
Still in Perth, this four-piece who formed early last year, return with their follow up to last September's debut, 'Vax': a busy, two-and-a-half minutes of fuzzy, energetic rock'n'roll.
CAMARANO - MORTAL MAN
This is the second single from Perth engineer, writer and producer Mat Cammarano's new EP, 'Somebody Else', released April 6. Weaving clever musical hooks and rhythms with an effortlessly vocal delivery, sweetly crooned over woozy analog synth.
HALCYON DRIVE - SILVER RAY
New from the Melbourne trio, melding shiny, infectious synthpop melodies and harmonies and foot-tapping uptempo beats, produced by Joel Quartermain. Taken from their debut full-length, out later in year.
ESSIE HOLT - MAGNETISE
Previously heard with 'Underwater' at the end of 2017, more electronic indie-pop melancholia on second single from the Melbourne-based singer-songwriter, co-written and produced by fellow Melb artist Fractures. Airy vocals, with subtle arpeggios underscored by deft percussion and a sweeping chorus.
