Track Of The Day :: Margot - Twenty Six
Words: Ellie Ward
After April's debut single, the atmospheric dreampop 'Desensitised', South London five-piece Margot return with 'Twenty Six', self-released last Friday (June 1).
With vocalist Alex Hannaway being described by one of Little Indie's Roundtable panel as sounding like "Morrissey fronting DIIV or Sunflower Bean", we were eager to hear if this remained the case on their follow-up track.
Where 'Desensitised' was a lament to the repetitious nature of modern capital-city life, on 'Twenty Six' Margot decide to turn the camera inwards, as Hannaway reveals: "It is a discussion with myself, a self-reflective hangover, when you make pledges to yourself, full up with anxiety and memory loss."
Produced and mixed by drummer Ben Andrewes, 'Twenty Six' was recorded over long weekends at Andrewes' house. From the languid opening, it's an easy on the ears number with a reflective melancholy in its dreampop air (and yes, still a touch of the Morrisseys there in the vocal), over laid-back guitars and steady drums. Perfect hangover listening, in fact.
