With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
HEMINGWAY - MEDICINE MAN
It's nearly six minutes long, but every one is worth listening to, on this new track from the Brisbane psych-reggae four-piece's new EP, 'Mystic Kingdom', out on July 17. It's as infectious as you might expect from reggae side, given an added flavour with a hip-hop/funk infusion.
POLYESTER - HONEY
Last featured by Little Indie with 'Different For A Boy' last November, the Auckland, NZ synth-pop quintet have just released their self-titled debut album last week - from which this live favourite comes. A lazy, swaying melodic summer vibe with sweet vocal bursts.
MURRAY DARLING - DON'T SAY YOU'RE MOVING TO MELBOURNE
Single cut - released last week - from Sydney singer-songwriter BJ Smith's forthcoming debut EP, ‘Blend 43’ (out August 16). This sub two and a half minute follow-up to debut single 'Leave Me This Way', with its singalong chorus line and rip-roaring blend of garage and punk, and a sonic guitar and drum backing, draws to a close in what seems all too quickly, on a squall of guitar feedback.
RADICALS - ANXIETY
Debut track from the young Sydney grunge rockers, who lyrically tackle the afflicting issue of anxiety. Don't expect any mellow outing here, however, for the intense and driven track positively rips through a scorching tirade of raw vocals and a welter of huge riffs and guitar dexterity. Think Nirvana - with an Oz twang.
RVG - EGGSHELL WORLD
Melbourne retro post-punks whom Little Indie featured back in May with the title track from their debut album, ‘A Quality Of Mercy’ - out since last week via Fat Possum - share this track also from the record. The band return to the UK this month, to play London (Shacklewell Arms - July 9th), Leeds (Brudenell Social Club - 14th), Glasgow (Broadcast - 16th).
THE ATTICS - ULTRAMARINE
The psych-pop-rock Melbourne outfit unveiled this track last week as their first new material since last year's self-titled debut album. Produced by the band's Cameron Wade with Isaac Barter, the opening is an attention-grabbing jangle of guitars and pulsating percussion, and hooky bass notes, through into lush and woozy floating melodies and hypnotic vocals.
