Best new tracks Down Under #28
With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
HOBSONS BAY COAST GUARD - SURF 1
Following their earlier 'Dolphin Racer', this Melbourne quartet - who describe themselves as "a squadron of earworm farmers who quit their day jobs to become surf lords" - bring another round of infectiously bouncy melodies, jangly warped rhythms and a high-flying falsetto vocal to three and a half minutes that coast along on surfy waves.
THE FLORETS - SLEEP
"If you're feeling down / Go to bed and get some sleep, dear girl" is how this sub-four minute debut single, released this week on Marthouse Records, by the Melbourne-based indie psych quartet opens. "Sleep was written for the tired, strung out folk of the world," says vocalist and songwriter Nick Dawes (brother Josh is also a Florets member), who lends his distinctive vocal to the melancholy alt-rock cadence.
SKETTI TANGLES - THE LONG WAY DOWN
Formerly, one half of Melbourne's The Pryor Theory, the now Brisbane-based producer delivers this melancholy debut release with reverb-drenched vocals that capture the pain of the end of a relationship - in this case, his marriage - which weave through restrained sonic instrumentation in a not too dissimilar style to Gotye.
MURMURMUR - CABLE CAR
Produced by Oscar Dawson (HOLY HOLY, Alex Lahey, Ali Barter), this the first single from the forthcoming debut EP by the Melbourne-based City Calm Down's touring guitarist Will Fletcher's project. Lo-fi, psych-pop that builds over wistful vocals and dueling guitars before coming to an explosive, swirling close.
HALCYON DRIVE - AGNOSIA
Bursting out the vocal hooks over a fuzzy bassline and riffy guitar distortion, comes the Melbourne-based trio's follow-up to previous single 'Silver Ray'. Written "from the perspective of someone so lost in following or fighting other people’s opinions, that they’ve lost the ability to think for themselves,” imparts frontman Michael Oechsle.
FANFICKK - COTTON CANDY
Auckland, NZ electro-pop artist follows February's 'Standing Still' with this new self-produced electronic single, released July 6. Thumping beat and sugar sweet vocals make this synth-driven concoction a sunny and infectious outing.
