Sing & Tell :: Lyerr
Manchester melodic, alt-rock four-piece Lyerr formed in 2015, releasing their debut EP ‘In Principio’ last summer. Deceptively subtle, their ambitious crescendos of sound and confident punky vocal swagger give Lyerr the edge. New single ‘Taking Over’ is out now.
Who are you?
I'm Ryan Johnson, vocals and guitar with Lyerr. The rest are Sam Greene (lead guitar) Rory Magner (Bass) and James Kershaw (drums).
Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today?
From a combination of Whitefield and Rochdale, we formed the band after finishing college. It wasn't until we released our first demo that we decided to put everything into the band and make it a priority. The demo was supported by Clint Boon and Sara Cox which helped get our name about the Manchester up and coming music scene and give us the confidence that maybe we can actually give this a serious crack.
Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.
As individuals we all have different music tastes and we each wanna get our own influences on the tracks. As a collective we look at the likes of The Amazons and Blossoms in terms of the level we want to get to as they've set the bar for emerging bands in the UK.
Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.
Usually I'll try get something concrete down on my acoustic, listen back and see if I like the melody before I'd play it to Sam. He'll usually tell me whether it's a keeper or not and will trust his judgement. Once that's sorted, we'll take it to our rehearsal room and try make it as exciting as we can.
Tell us a little about your new single.
We had 'Taking Over' in the catalogue for quite awhile, but speaking for myself, I always felt something was missing originally. The song really came to life when we were in the studio with Gavin Monaghan (The Sherlocks, The Twang, The Blinders). It was important for us to have his experience saying what was working and what we didn't really need. The song has only been out a week but we've already had the support of BBC Introducing from Natalie and Michelle which is a big deal for us as that's where we've first heard some of our favourite artists now.
Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?
Yeah, we're buzzing to be a part of this year's Blackthorn Festival on 21st July with the likes of Pete Doherty, We Are Scientists and Twisted Wheel. Being on the same bill as one of our first influences, Pete Doherty, is probably the highlight of our summer so we can't wait.
How's the rest of the year looking, plans-wise?
We're just off the back of a headline gig at The Eagle Inn which sold out a month in advance. So yeah, we're just finalising our next headline gig with a bigger venue for the autumn.
Where can we hear more of your music?
Along with 'Taking Over', we have our debut EP, 'In Principio', available on Spotify and iTunes.
