Sing & Tell :: Superego
Midlands four-piece Superego released their Bill Ryder-Jones-produced, four-minute slice of alt-rock debut single 'Sleep' last month via Austin, Texas-based label Big Indie Records.
Who are you?
I’m Cam, I write the tunes, play guitar and sing. Then we've got Tom on guitar and some tasty BV’s, Luke on bass and BV’s and then Samuel is the beast behind the kit.
Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today?
Well, I’m from the Midlands, as are the other guys, and we met through bands and friends on the local music scene. I started to write for Superego before I even knew any of the boys. I then played with Luke and Tom in various musical incarnations, then started to form a band and we ended up together. Luke brought Samuel into the fold and we kicked on from there.
Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.
The inspirations behind the writing for Superego and mainly 90s acts, such as Radiohead, Nirvana, Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckely, but there are loads of other acts around now that are a good influence, such as Marika Hackman, Brightness, Our Girl, Good Morning.
Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.
I usually write all the songs on my own at home; it’s something I got very used to doing when I was without a band and I feel comfortable in that environment as it’s proven quite fruitful! Since playing a while in the band now, I’ll often bring certain songs into the rehearsal scenario and work out songs that way. It depends on the vibe of the track, to be honest.
Tell us a little about your new single.
'Sleep' is an aggressive anti-consumerist song, I guess, taking a swipe at the political powers that be and many of the pillars of society we’ve been bought up to respect and hold dear that have manipulatively let us down and continue to do so for the gain of a small minority over the public majority.
Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?
We don’t have anything in the book at the moment, but we’re working on hooking up a London show this summer and then jumping on some support slots come the autumn.
How's the rest of the year looking, plans-wise?
Pretty exciting. We’re going to be releasing another single in the next month and then an EP at the end of the summer. Planning on being back in the studio with our Bill as well, which would be great.
Where can we hear more of your music?
