Track Of The Day :: Mac Benson - Home With Me
Words: Linn Branson
Putting out a track over the Christmas period is never a good idea - unless seasonally-themed - and certainly not if you are a new artist. Almost falling victim to the Yuletide spirit in an adverse way was Mac Benson's 'Home With Me'.
Written and produced by the 18-year-old singer-songwriter based in a bedroom in Newcastle upon Tyne, he gave a clue to the song's inspiration in a Twitter tweet saying: "are you a gay man?have you ever done that weird thing where you accidentally fall in love with a 'straight' guy? then you'll love (and probably closely identify with) my new song!"
Heavily inspired by Robyn, Lorde and Taylor Swift, the song was written, Mac elaborates further to Little Indie, "about meeting somebody on a night out, I'd gotten separated from my friends and ended up spending the entire night with this guy who I'd just met. Something about him and that night seemed special, at times almost movie like. The whole song is basically about me wanting to go home with him, but I couldn't, because he had a girlfriend."
The heartbreak electro-pop track starts off in a quiet, subdued fashion before Mac's yearning voice and entrancing layers of electronics come in to bring about an unexpected appealing quality.
