Life At The Arcade Sing & Tell on 'Tabloids' (and why one of them is nicknamed 'Daddam'!)
Liverpool's Life At The Arcade follow up previous single 'Wonderland' and debut EP, ‘From The Basement’, with new release, the live favourite 'Tabloids', which sees the indie four-piece stick two firm fingers up at tabloid journalism and its reporting practices and those publications that wilfully propagate fake news through our society.
Who are you?
I’m Paddy Clegg, I’m the lead singer of the band and I also play rhythm guitar. On drums we’ve got Paul Crilly, on bass we’ve got Ben Truman, and on lead guitar we have Adam Holmes, who we’ve nicknamed “Daddam” as he’s probably the most mature out of all of us.
Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.
We are all born and bred Liverpool lads. We all met each other from gigging in other bands in the past. Me and Paul first met at a really cheesy school battle of the bands competition when we were younger.
Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.
All four of us have a wide taste in music. Check out our recent tour playlist on Spotify and you’ll know exactly what I mean. We’ve been listening to a lot of Boy Azooga , White Denim and Foals lately. Our influences in terms of writing would probably be Foals, Catfish & The Bottlemen, The Killers, The Beatles - and loads more...
Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.
Most songs we’ve written have came from us jamming out different ideas and messing about, really. It eventually formulates itself into a song without us even realising sometimes. However, there’s also been times when I’ve came into the practice room with a rough idea of lyrics and we’ll build around them and go from there. We don’t really have a magic formula to be honest: we just see what happens and if it happens, it happens. I think forcing yourself to write a song is probably one of the worst things you can do as an artist. Your brain will hit you with an idea when it’s ready...
Tell us a little about your new single.
Our new single is about mainstream media and news. Sometimes as a society we are led to believe into things that are not necessarily true. So I wrote 'Tabloids' as a sort of message for people to be more aware and not to believe everything they hear or take as as gospel.
Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?
Of course. Our favourite thing to do after our shows is speaking to people and grabbing a pint with the audience, or speaking to them at the merch stand. Come and say hello! You can catch us at these:
20th April Jimmy's, Manchester
21st April The Leopard, Doncaster
25th April Finborough Arms, London
26th April Maida Vale, Sheffield
How's the year looking, plans-wise?
The rest of the year is looking great so far. We’ve got another single dropping, lots of festivals and some EU dates which we are really excited about.
Where can we hear more of your music?
Best place to find us is on Spotify or SoundCloud.
What social media platforms can we find you on?
