Leeds trio Sea Legs Sing & Tell on dark-pop, song writing & 'Flowers'
Leeds alt-rock three-piece Sea Legs follow their recent Live At Leeds appearance with the release of their catchy, dark-pop single 'Flowers' on May 3.
Who are you?
I'm Tom Saunders, and I play guitar and sing lead vocals. Calum Macgregor plays bass and sings backing vocals, and Joshua Hagan plays drums, percussion (and backing vocals, one day very soon).
Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.
We all met at Leeds College Of Music and then started playing music together after we graduated - I’d had some songs for a while that I really wanted to put into a band project, so Cal and I started working on it and writing together and then Josh got involved a bit later on - and now here we are.
Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.
The easiest way of describing our musical style is probably alternative rock, but it’s pretty open to interpretation. We all have different influences - The Beatles, Radiohead, The National, Wilco, St. Vincent to name a few - which means that when we get together to write, we can draw from a whole pool of ideas. We’re all listening to different things all the time, which I think is a very healthy thing to do. There’s so much good music coming out at the moment if you know where to look, and Leeds is a great place to discover new artists.
Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.
The writing process isn’t always the same, but it will often begin with a musical idea; a chord sequence, a bass riff, something like that. Cal and I will then get together and run through ideas and run with something that we think has potential. I tend to write lyrics with little or no melodic or rhythmic frame in mind, so if we have a musical idea that we want to pursue, I’ll flick through notebooks and look for something that might fit. Things then inevitably change and grow when we get it into the rehearsal room - that’s where we spend time nit-picking over little parts and fine-tuning the arrangement. Things often then change again when we get into the studio, but I think we all like the idea that it can come out sounding completely different to your original version - you can always go back to an older version but if you don’t try out new ideas then you never know the potential something might have. As Josh says, ‘only one way to find out’.
Tell us a little about your new single.
‘Flowers’ is about finding yourself trapped in a routine that’s having a negative impact, and putting everyone else before yourself to an extent that it’s damaging. Aside from that, it’s got a fuzzy bass solo and a wavy animated music video by Cait McEniff that is a visual treat.
Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?
We will be playing at The Sesh in Hull on 28th May and then at our local Headrow House on 31st to close out the month. After that, who knows - keep ‘em peeled.
How's the year looking, plans-wise?
We want to play as many shows as possible but we’re spending most of this year bunkering down and writing some new material and getting things in place for 2020. We are also going to be working with the amazing folks at Come Play With Me (a Leeds music label), so we can’t wait to share more on that with everyone later this year.
Where can we hear more of your music?
We are on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, Google Play and Amazon Music. Psst, we also have t-shirts on our Bandcamp…
What social media platforms can we find you on?
Instagram (contains all of the useful info and also regular comedic content) Facebook
