IV League's Lachie Gilmour streams self-titled debut EP as Bluey
Words: Ellie Ward
Melbourne-based guitarist and songwriter Lachie Gilmour, better known as one half of IV League, now follows partner Bella Venutti with his own solo project, Bluey, and this his self-titled debut EP.
In contrast to his role in IV League, 'Bluey', released last week, surprises as he effortlessly embraces lead for the first time. His glorious take on the bedroom pop genre sprinkles mesmerising synth swirls over an otherwise low-key, rock-tinged approach.
The five-track record was recorded alongside Michael Vince Moin (Tram Cops) in his bedroom studio in Thornbury. Further production was undertaken by Gab Strum of Japanese Wallpaper and then mixed by Callum Barter (Courtney Barnett/Saskwatch).
The resulting sound is one Bluey can call his own - guitar-based bedroom pop, surrounded by drum machines, synth stabs and smooth layered vocals, tightly-structured songs with pop melodies, indie rock style instrumentation and a folk essence.
"I begun writing for 'Bluey' late last year and everything started to click," says Gilmour. "I finally felt settled on my sound and proud of what I was creating to record these songs.
The EP is a collection of songs that represent the trials and tribulations of being in my mid 20s. The songs explore concepts such as betrayal, depression, love and realisation, with half the EP being insights into past experiences and the other half being an inner dialogue about life."
