Listen :: MarthaGunn - We Don’t Need Each Other
Words: Sam Geary
Brighton five-piece MarthaGunn have released their new single ‘We Don’t Need Each Other’, out now via Communion Records.
Lead singer Abi Woodman’s raw vocals express inner feelings and demons on the funk-rock anti-Valentine’s song ‘We Don’t Need Each Other'. Inspired by the brutal truthfulness of her songwriting heroes Christine McVie and Carly Simon, as well as the boldness of newer artists like Lizzo, whom Abi describes as being part of “a generation of women who are just doing their thing, speaking freely without feeling embarrassed.”
“So many people are dependent on a partner or feel they can’t cope without another person in their lives," says Abi. "I’ve been that person. People often think it’s strange if you’ve been single for too long, but these are all outdated ideas. I wanted to write a song that stood up for choosing to be single or at least trying to stay single and resist the temptation to fall into a comfortable relationship.”
The band are on tour from the end of March.
