Recorded at Rockinghorse Studios, the song precedes a new EP, and indicates a bold new approach for the band.

Sharp and propulsive, 'Housewife' provides both plenty of post-punk resolve, tempered by Darcy Dexter's urgent vocal that keeps things buoyed up in a jagged projectory for three minutes before closing out.

What's even better, is that they are currently forgoing an Oz winter for the delights of a British summer, and are on tour here in the UK for the next weeks with Ocean Alley.
“I don’t think it’s really worth saying exactly what the song is about as I think this one in particular gives a very clear overall mood," says co-vocalist and guitarist Tim Malkin of the woozy, rose-tinted ode to unrequited feelings and what could have been.

"I also don’t really know what it’s about," he adds. "I was getting really bored of writing super specific songs about stuff that had exclusively happened to me, and on top of that, who even cares? I think overall it’s about surface level encounters - how they are usually thought to be bad but can also be good. It was written just after lockdown one and I think I had quite a romantic yearning to speak to someone outside a pub about Neil Young in 1974.”

Created and produced by 10 Days, the video for 'Why Don’t You Love Me Lana Del Rey' tells a dark tale of bliss and revenge starring an adorable purple monster falling in love with a Lana Del Rey lookalike. The film was part of a unique brand collaboration with the crowd sourced sustainability platform Wherefrom.

Check it out below.

©2012 – All rights reserved

Well... the story’s not finished. With a new EP, ‘As You Hear Me Now You Listen To My Past', out on May 28, its lead single ‘Midnight Club’ is one of the record's standouts, with its 'Live fast, die young', and/or 'Grow up' mindset whilst delivering laid back guitars against Gore's own internalised demons in the vocals.
Recorded in a Cornwall Airbnb along with Mumfords/Florence producer Pete Prokopiw (and mixed later by Andy Savours - Sigur Ros, Killers), the EP has a lot of dedication and heart running throughout.

“This EP represents serious growth for me," says Gore. "Although it is important to look forward, it is equally important to look back and reflect. That is why, even with such a long time between recording and release, people can change, people can grow. Sometimes people just need more time to get there.”

Describing her music as protest pop, the conversations which Sillars carried out are a candid exploration of how Brexit, the numerous lockdowns and more have impacted people from all walks of life in different ways.

Whilst on the surface the songs are all quite serious and politically charged as you might expect given the themes, the backing music has a bit more legroom. At times ‘Desperate Characters’ is reminiscent of the reflective and thought-provoking moments from long lost pop culture American dramas like The OC and One Tree Hill with its atmospheric and heartfelt keys showcased on the track ‘California’ or its mazy eastern sounding guitars which dance in the moonlight of ‘Gone to War.’

If you’re on the hunt for an EP to distract you from the current climate, you may be best to leave this one on the passenger seat until COVID-19 is little more than a small speck on the horizon. However, if you’re searching for an EP to soundtrack the thoughts and insecurities bouncing back and forth in your head, this can help act as a bit of a release and it’s perhaps comforting to know that you’re not alone in your thoughts.
This time round it reflects a more mature band, from Brian Callan's deeper vocal timbre, to the heavier, more assured sound that is augmented by vintage synths and staccato strings. Lyrically minimalistic, the song capitalises on the blissful harmonies of Callan and Ian Finnegan to make for a lush, shoegaze-inspired soundscape.

While 'Drifting' retains a sense of escapism, it is anchored by a new confidence and assurance that warrants its place in 2021's hit list.

<div style="color: #cccccc; font-family: Interstate, "Lucida Grande", "Lucida Sans Unicode", "Lucida Sans", Garuda, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 10px; overflow: hidden; text-overflow: ellipsis; white-space: nowrap; word-break: normal;">SENSES · Drifting

©2012 – All rights reserved

W.L.

April 2 2021 (Parlophone Records)

9/10

Words: Richard Cobb

It’s been a long time coming this debut album from West Lothian’s The Snuts. A quick scroll of the band’s social media pages this week paints a picture of the blood, sweat, tears and tonic wine that have gone into making this debut album. Above all, it’s been a tremendous amount of graft and determination which has rewarded the band and their loyal fanbase with some magic moments. Perhaps most notably, tearing the roof off the main stage at Glasgow’s TRNSMT Festival in 2019 and selling out The Barrowlands three nights on the trot ahead of their rescheduled UK tour this autumn.

With big hitters like ‘Elephants’, ‘Somebody Loves You’ and ‘Always’ already out in the wild there’s always the worry that behind the curtain the rest of the album falls slightly flat, but that’s far from the case here and it’s no real surprise when you consider the meticulous effort the band will have gone to to get this one right.

Album opener ‘Top Deck’ is a gentle acoustic number with a subtle but beautiful layer of strings crouching in the shadows of the mix. You could imagine this song would be completely obliterated by jubilant well-watered fans singing their hearts out in their next run of shows, yet somehow the thought of how this song will be drunkenly received in the flesh only adds to its warmth.

‘Always’ follows and kicks things up a gear to a more familiar pace. Though it’s been out for nearly six months, it’s still as fresh and exciting as it was on first listen and the crisp production of the track coupled with the rough diamond vocals from frontman Jack Cochrane really levitates The Snuts high above any other guitar band at the moment.

The lead guitar work from Joe McGillveray is consistently impressive throughout 'W.L.' , but in particular the swagger and attitude it possesses on ‘Juan Belmonte’ oozes style and carries the track in a similar fashion to how the noodling basslines from Callum Wilson take the wheel on the next song ‘All Your Friends.’

The one that might prove to be the most commercially successful on the album ‘Somebody Loves You’ is reminiscent of that video that has been doing the rounds, with the arsehole guy that measures out all the sugar in a Creme Egg in a bid to put folk off Creme Eggs for life. Suffice to say it hasn’t put me off Creme Eggs in the slightest, but I probably don’t need that much sugar in my life. To simplify that very flawed analogy, this track’s a bit too sweet for my liking and I don’t think it adds anything to the rest of the album. Other than maybe a few thousand radio plays.

‘Glasgow’ bursts into life just when you think it’s going to be a slow-burner and it’s a blessing that it does as there’s bolts of energy shot out from all angles here which make it one of the highlights of the album which is no easy feat given how stiff the competition is.

‘No Place I’d Rather Go’ and ‘Boardwalk’ kick off the second half with some cinematic vibes and hauntingly atmospheric backing vocals which swirl in and out of the mix. Jordan Mackay’s faint and at times in and out of consciousness drums over these songs is something of a contrast to the higher tempo he enjoys across the majority of the album, but the less is more approach works brilliantly and it showcases his broad range of styles and attention to detail.

It’s something of a fine art that the band have so seamlessly managed to tie together a wide range of styles in one album without once sounding disjointed or contrived. From the acoustic highs of ‘Top Deck’ to the indie bangers ‘Coffee & Cigarettes’ and ‘Elephants’, culminating with fan-favourite and staple live set-closer ‘Sing For Your Supper’ to call time on the album, it’s a damn near flawless debut from the West Lothian quartet and well worth the wait.

Leith’s psychedelic three-piece Felix and the Sunsets comprise of Max Wilson, Sean Logan and Felix Christie. Though the band are still relatively fresh faces on the Edinburgh scene since their inception in 2018, frontman Christie was formerly lead guitarist in Ayakara. Alongside the similarly defunct Indigo Velvet, the band were prominent figures in the city’s live circuit for a number of years so it’s good to see he hasn’t hung up his guitar and is now taking a more central role in his latest project.

Following in the footsteps of last month’s high-tempo ‘The Mushroom Song’ from their upcoming Creative Scotland funded EP, the band tone it down a little with the more lounge-happy ‘Leaving On the Next Train.’ The trio cite the old guard of Frank Zappa and Santana as influences, however there’s also shades of ‘Howl’ by Avalanche Party in the Western saloon sounding piano. The keys jump around and play an intense high-tempo game of audio ping pong with Christie’s vocals as both battle it out for centre stage for the lion’s share of the track.

The signature smooth sounding guitar which was ever-present in Ayakara makes an appearance two-thirds of the way in as a super sub for the piano and nods more towards the aforementioned influences with its clean and precise texture.

With the band planning to unveil the final track from their EP at the end of April ahead of its full release, given the diverse nature between the last two singles, it’s anyone’s guess how this is going to turn out. However, being unable to firmly pinpoint a genre only adds to the appeal of the band.
