Under the moniker of Loyal Lobos, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Andrea Silva crafts raw, alt-folk-gaze songs that break convention.
Released earlier this month, 'Swim' is a sparse, stripped back number that opens on soft acoustic guitar notes, before it builds on its hazy melancholy to a finale of resounding drums and electric guitar balanced against the ethereal quality of the soft vocals as she intones, “I can hear your pain / I’ll sing for you / anything you want".
Imbued with vulnerability, Silva mines personal experience, the melodrama of Colombian telenovellas, and memories of a childhood during which her parents considered music an unwelcome distraction, to create poetic works that make sweeping allusions to love, sexuality and femininity. But it is the haunting delivery of her voice that stands head and shoulders above all else; spine-tingling and affecting, guaranteed to remain lingering in the memory.
