Best new tracks Down Under #4




With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.


BEC STEVENS - 10 MINUTE DRIVE

Adelaide-based singer-songwriter precedes her forthcoming EP 'Why Don't You Just', out February 15 on Hobbledehoy Records, with this January released cut that reflects on the breakup of a relationship, employing subtle vocals combined with gradually building guitars and percussion.

LEMONBAIT - I WANNA BE YOUR MAN TONIGHT


Lead track from the Warrnambool, Victoria trio's self-titled album, released January 14. Currently a four-man outfit with Tom Boote from Astrocrypt Hellsurfers on guitar, the group is the project of Sam Pyers who heads up this rock'n'roll burner track.

LUBOKU - SOLAR FLARE


The Melbourne producer follows the release of his debut EP 'The Surface' with this live favourite. A six-minute layered electronic swell that builds from a low-key piano opening to indulge in percussion and bass melodies that become atmospheric spiritual house.

BEYOND THE PICTURE - FOX AND THE HOUND


Alt-rock quartet from Adelaide encompass a wide range of influences into one original sound, most notably on this new single, digitally released last week. Danceable beat and bass lines and catchy melodies are juxtaposed with the spirited vocals of Josh Watson and Claudia Gill. The lyrics like the title, profile two opposing characters and their differing thoughts on the relationship as they realise their identities through a non-narrative form.

SALTY LIPS - CROSSED LINES


The "four nutters from Sydney’s Northern Beaches" as they describe themselves, pump out a mix of indie-folk and surf-rock on this track from their debut album, 'Gettin’ Any?', which was recorded at Rancho de la Luna (Joshua Tree), co-produced by Dave Catching (Eagles of Death Metal), and released January 17.

BEACHWARE - RESPITE

Auckland, NZ's electric surf-pop crew returned late last year with this first single since their 2017 debut EP 'Twin Coast Disk Drive'. Catchy melodies combine with shimmery guitars and equally shimmery dual vocals from RJ Hartnell and Alexandra Selkirk-Hanna. The just released video to the track was directed by Frances Carter.
