With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
SOCCERPRACTISE - YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN
Recently featured here with 'Posture', the Aotearoa, NZ electronic trio return with the second cut from their upcoming second album, 'Te Pō', out October 18. The haunting, melancholic track opens with a breathless choir sample and programmed hand-clap, before introducing a deep bass line, garage guitars and a personal lyric exploring the conflicted memories of childhood and loss.
ECHO OHS - WILD WEEDS
Auckland, NZ garage-psych outfit are back with new single 'Wild Weeds', the title track of their upcoming mini-album, out September 6 via 1:12 Records. Propulsive drum beats augmenting echoing vocals, with a fuzzy vibe, and follows May's 'Fool' drop.
WAXFLOWER - BACK TO BACK
Brisbane-based four-piece follow debut 'Cut Your Teeth' with anthemic, singalong, guitar-driven single, produced by Stevie Knight (Yours Truly, Between You & Me). "'Back To Back' is a voyage into my own neurosis," says frontman Tristan Higginson. "I was pretty much having panic attacks every day related to my health anxiety, which caused me to withdraw myself in my relationships. It’s hard to be present when you think you’re going to die every three hours. It was exhausting, and this song focuses on some of the negative repercussions that line of thinking brings, and looks in to how I was dealing with them at the time." Catch live at launch show at Brisbane's Crowbar Black on August 24.
KITTEN HEEL - TAKE ME WITH YOU
Out this week, the addictively moreish, foot-tapping new single from the Illawarra five-piece electronic alt-indies. After their debut 'Peephole Gallery' in April, they bring another five-minute slice of danceable, lo-fi swagger, filled out with four synths and new wave elements.
SURF TRASH - FRIENDS
The explosive Newcastle, New South Wales surf-rock teen trio return this week with the first taste of new material since their debut EP 'Busy Doing Nothing' earlier this year. "When listening to the song it sounds like it’s about trying to chase someone you think you might be into or even love, but it’s actually about being aware of your own mental health," says vocalist/drummer Andy Scott. "Having a circle of people you can trust and a supportive network around you is incredibly important when you’re going through some of those harder times. Realising which people you can actually trust as “friends” and learning it’s not about the quantity of friends you have in life, but the quality, that’s what is most important."
MID CITY - FAKE FRIENDS FOREVER
Taken from their latest 'Die Waiting' EP released in April, the Melbourne-based group bring their alt-pop-rock sound to this (Holy Holy) Oscar Dawson-produced, hard-hitting single cut. Catch live at London's Sebright Arms on October 1 for a one-off UK date.
