Best new tracks Down Under #40
With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
DEAD LITTLE PENNY - DEAD TOGETHER
Little Indie last heard the Auckland, NZ electro-dreamgaze three-piece with 'Depression' earlier in the year. Now with their debut album 'Urge Surfing' out November 13, we hear a fuzzy taste of it. "I just really wanted to write a song that pokes fun in a really open and honest way about the shitty things we do for love, friendship, and a sense of belonging," says vocalist Hayley Smith, as she drives a punk-edged tone around gnarly guitars. Catch live on November 15 at The Wine Cellar, Auckland.
GARAGE SALE - RAINY DAY FUND
The grunge-punk trio from Lennox Head, New South Wales follow up their earlier 'Home', ahead of debut EP 'You Don't Have to Grow Up', due for release next month. The song, about "not having any money to buy nice things, but still having fun with the simple things in life", fields a catchy, upbeat appeal with fuzzed-out guitars and frontman and guitarist Dan Sullivan's Aussie delivery sealing the deal.
NOTHING REALLY - BREATHE
After making their debut last year with 'Heirloom', followed by the more recent 'New Skin', the Melbourne alt-indie four-piece's new single is about creating a world of good in spite of the scary realities around us. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Jack Newlyn (Paradise Club), vocalist/guitarist Victoria Austin helms the four minutes of lightly balanced guitars and dreamy melodies, building to a climax in the last 60 seconds.
THE SUNDAY ESTATE - LET'S STOP PRETENDING
Out October 11, the new single from the Sydney-based rockers, produced by Ryan K Brennan (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Julia Jacklin). Inspired by the Netflix rom-com To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, it kicks like a good 'un from the off, with a weighty beat that propels it along in runaway train fashion. Catch live for a release show on October 24 at The Chippo Hotel, Chippendale, NSW.
SHORELINES - MESSED UP
New single, released October 10, from the Brisbane alt-rock band. The song - about "struggling with your thoughts, the way you feel, the way you look and the struggle of every day life. This song is to say that you’re not alone, because we are all a little messed up" - is a sturdy rocker that belts put its forceful message via Harry White' s determined delivery.
JACK BOTTS - NORTHERN RIVERS
The Byron Bay-based artist shares the title track from his forthcoming EP, out November 1. Quietly effective, acoustic alt-folk with emotive lyricism and ear-soothing vocal. The song, he says, is about "an old friend of mine... about a conversation I had once with a total stranger (in the Northern Rivers) who was going through a rough patch in life, but completely opened up to me. I was pretty young at the time and felt it wasn’t my place to dish out advice to someone going through something I had no idea about. When I got home not long after the chat, I wrote down everything she spoke about and put it into a song."
