Live
Amber Run
Roundhouse, London
October 19 2019
Words: Izzy Butler
It was a big, colourful show, all right. Filling out Camden's Roundhouse, Amber Run brought a variety of hues
to the premier venue's stage, both in song material and lighting effects that accompanied their 20-song set.
The Nottingham trio - filling out their numbers to five live - brought a large section of their just released third studio album 'Philophobia' for this, the last date on their current UK tour, starting out with Henry Wyeth's high piano notes setting off 'Neon Circus', followed by their classic 'Just My Soul Responding' from their '5AM' debut album.

But it was 2017's 'For A Moment I Was Lost' full-length from which they drew on the largest proportion, early on running 'Insomniac', 'Stranger' and 'Fickle Game' consecutively.
One of the highlights of the set came with Pete Restrick of supporting act Stereo Honey joining frontman Joe Keogh on stage for a spine-tingling rendition of 'Affection', with two such fine voices joined in harmony for one of Amber Run's most poignant, rawly emotive songs, was a pleasure to behold.

Followed by 'Amen', it was hard for the crowd to hold back tears, as its profound lyrics contemplating death, grief and if anything is beyond ("And is there a God up there? /So, where does He hide? / 'Cause the devil is raging inside my mind / And is there a moment when it all makes sense? / When saying goodbye, doesn't feel like the end?") sombrely echoed around the cavernous space.
'Noah', 'Spark' and 'Wastelands' close the main part of the set, before they return for an encore of 'Haze', 'I Found', and lastly, fan favourite, 'No Answers', the song "about frustration and feeling completely helpless about something.” Not that the lyrics were apt tonight, as Amber Run held their own to shine incandescently.
