Track Of The Day :: Leeds band Cruel World 'Take The Reigns'
Words: Ellie Ward
Ahead of their self-titled debut EP, arriving at the end of the month, Leeds outfit Cruel World share one of its tracks, 'Take The Reigns'.
It's a smooth and classy affair, this four-and-a-half minute, low-key number which was recorded in drummer Lee Smith’s Greenmount Studio, and comes as the belated second offering after debut 'Boxer' last year, which saw early support from Steve Lamacq.
The quintet are fronted by James Smith (Post War Glamour Girls), who says of the EP:
"We recorded this last October. It’s taken us the best part of a year to get it out. In that time we’ve played no more than 5 shows. It’s been slow. Between us, we’ve got wives, kids, dogs and the rest. We’ve got jobs, some of us have jobs we like... I think you’re supposed to call them careers. We’ve got other bands; we’ve got quiz night on a Wednesday and it’s always someone’s birthday on the weekend. It’s hard to do more, but it’s worth it when we do.
"All of the stuff we’ve got going on, that’s our lives and it finds its way into our songs. It’s all part of the same trip. A whole year down the line, everyone’s kind of the same. The world's kind of the same but it’s completely different. A year feels like a long time but it’s a blip. We’re a blip! The songs on this e.p aren’t anchored to a moment, it’s nice to put them out knowing that as long as the internet exists, they’re there and able to be discovered by others. Maybe not now... but at some point, down the line. New music 1000 years too late."

(PS. While we hate to be pedantic, we feel these 'reigns' in fact might be 'reins' - but hey, we didn't write it so we are producing as found!)
