Track Of The Day :: The Snuts introduce 'Juan Belmonte'

Words: Linn Branson

Who is Juan Belmonte and what is he - and why have The Snuts written a song about him?

Well, Senor Belmonte was a famous Spanish bullfighter who died in 1962, not as the result of being gored by a bull, but by committing suicide with a pistol, not long after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

The Snuts' eponymous musical homage - released today (October 18) - is a pulsating, riff heavy outing, filled with the band’s alt-indie sound and brimming with immediacy, and was recorded with Rich Costey (Muse, Interpol, Biffy Clyro) in London, and with Inflo (Karen O, Michael Kiwanuka, Little Simz) in Los Angeles.

The track was written in the West Lothian quartet’s practise space and quickly became known as ‘the big one’, before becoming ‘Big Juan’, and eventually, following some research into famous Juans, turning into ‘Juan Belmonte’ after the matador.

"‘Juan Belmonte' is a vibe in itself," says vocalist/guitarist Jack Cochrane. "With a modern take on our early 'Matador' EP demos, there is a slight progression and risk we are keen to showcase. It’s entirely up to yourself whether you dance or sulk to this track."

We'll be dancing, thanks.
