Midlands quintet Violet come armed with a sound that is both as sweet and ethereal as it is subtly powerful and captivating. On this debut four-track EP, they manage to capture a short, lucid package of polished excellence.
'Sometimes' plays Luke Brickett's delicious vocal, that croons and cradles against a groovy synth line, bluesy percussion and a rather retro groove. It's a great start, and one of the best of the four.
'Pure Blue' with reverb-shrouded guitars and infectious chorus hooks, is melded nicely with woozy pop melodies that bear a trace of heavier 90s grunge influences; while 'At Least I'll Say I Tried' takes a more downtempo mode. The laid-back head nodder of the record that breezes along for almost four and a half minutes - perhaps 30 seconds too long, as it starts to drag a little after its initial flourish.
If the previous track is perhaps the weakest, 'Shiver' more than redeems itself to close out. Violet pull out those tingly guitar riffs and lush melodies to perfection here, and this, together with the opening track, really do feel like heaven.
