The familiar scent of Lynx Africa, tobacco and tonic wine filled the cavernous Sebright Arms as chants of ‘Here we fucking go’ greeted West Lothian’s The Snuts at their sold out Annie Mac Presents show on Friday night. Something of a dress rehearsal ahead of their biggest headline show south of the border to date at Kentish Town Forum next month, band and fans were on top form throughout the hour long set.
“First time we came down (to London) people tried to stab us with swords, now we’re greeted like heroes,” mused frontman Jack Cochrane early into proceedings. Presumable exaggeration aside, he’s not wrong with his assertion. The Scottish heavy crowd transformed the London venue into a mobile King Tuts with their passion and support for their heroes. In all the excitement, and something of a reviewer's worst nightmare, the band heavily deviated from their setlist instead opting to jumble things up a bit with early run-outs for ‘Maybe California’ and recent single ‘Fatboy Slim.’ The latter something of a Rolling Stones, Kasabian and Stone Roses mash-up - making it the perfect recipe for a crowd-pleaser.
Each song gets a big reaction from the masses and you sense that the four-piece could play anything and they’d still get an immense reception from all crammed into the 120 capacity cellar.
Highlight of the night ‘Seasons’ and early track ‘What’s Going On’ receive huge reactions and are performed with buckets of energy from a band full of confidence. Shutting up shop with the anthemic ‘Sing For Your Supper’ the band rush off stage to show their gratitude to their congregation.
It’s still relatively early days, but with their ‘Mixtape’ EP due out next week, and the venue sizes rapidly increasing, The Snuts are living up to the hype and rewarding their loyal fanbase with memorable singalongs and consistently solid live shows.
This write up is bang on๐ musically getting brighter all time. A tight band and am expecting bigger better things. Keep grafting lads.
