Shangralas Sing & Tell on 'Perfect Education', song writing and postponed tour
Sheffield rock 'n' rollers Shangralas emerged in 2018 with debut single 'Going Nowhere', followed by '17' and 'White Gold' released at the start of 2020, receiving in excess of 100k online streams. New single 'Perfect Education' is due to be released in the coming weeks.
Who are you?
My name's Danny Way and I play guitar and sing in the band Shangralas. Also in the band is Max Asquith (guitar), Brad Cartwright (bass) and Jordan Watkin (drums).
Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.
We are a Sheffield-based indie rock band who have been gigging and releasing music for around 14 months. Prior to being Shangralas, Jordan, Brad and Max were in a band called The Harringtons.. The singer in their previous band didn’t want to continue making music so we started jamming together as I was good friends with Max. We decided rather than carrying on the previous band that we wanted to start something new so that’s why we changed the band's name and started a fresh project.
Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.
We have in some ways a typical Sheffield style with influences such as Milburn, Reverend and the Makers and Arctic Monkeys. We are also massively influenced by the 90s Britpop scene and also a lot of 90s hip hop.
Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.
All of our songs are wrote as a band generally, I or Max might have melodies or pieces of guitar already in the works, but we would normally spend a couple of hours jamming the songs out as a band and that’s where the initial sound comes from. Once we take them to the studio the process changes, a lot of the time. When we work with Gavin Monaghan at Magic Garden Studio we feel the track's finished, but he find ways to improve and take the track in a direction we didn’t know existed.
Tell us a little about your new single.
'Perfect Education' is a track we wrote a while back. We took it to the studio not really knowing what to expect and Gavin completely brought it to life. We held onto the song for a long time as it’s not our usual sound but after a massive response on social media when releasing a teaser of the song, we have decided to release the song on all major platforms.
Obviously we are unlikely to be catching up with you at any live shows for awhile given the present corinavirus situation, but anything ahead planned?
It’s a hard time for everyone. not just limited to people in bands but we have to postpone our current UK tour we had scheduled after completing the first date in Leeds which was amazing.
We had an amazing start to 2020 with national radio plays on BBC Radio and our biggest headliner scheduled for Sheffield’s iconic Leadmill venue. This gig was going to take place on the 1st of May and was nearly sold out. We have moved the gig back to the 15th or August, dependent on a further review closer to the date.
Where can we hear more of your music?
Our music is available on all major platforms such as iTunes, Spotify and Deezer.
