It's the start of a big weekend for The Howl & The Hum. Not only does today (May 29) see the release of their impactful debut album ‘Human Contact’, but also a video drop for one of its standouts, the stripped back heartbreaker, ‘Hostages’.
You can stream the 13-track record, produced by Jolyon Thomas (Royal Blood, Slaves, U2), and described by vocalist and songwriter Sam Griffiths as inspired by focusing on the minutiae of relationships, “all the strange objects, conversations, teenage bitterness and silences that permeate young love and loneliness,” in full below.
Directed by The Roosens - whose previous work has been nominated for a revered Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival - the video follows a couple handing over the last items each have as their relationship nears its end.
“This song felt very visual to us: the handing back of possessions after a breakup, the detachment from objects," remarks Griffiths. "Luckily, The Roosens had the idea to combine the ideas of social distancing with the breakup within the song. It was filmed in Belgium as the lockdown eased, but shows the attachment to objects in the lyrics, and the splitting of a whole into separate parts, and has two beautiful performances at its heart.”
