Gathering of Strangers show 'No Remorse' on heart-tugging single

Words: Linn Branson

Manchester five-piece Gathering of Strangers turned out a big pop rocker with 'No Remorse', just before the world went upside down with pandemics and lockdowns.

We hang our collective Little Indie heads in shame that we missed it on release, but given it is a rather fine work, we are belatedly giving it a shout out now.

Gathering of Strangers go for the atmospherics soundscape, and on this track they do it big time. Anthemic and intense, with heartstrings-tugging emotive vocals, sensitive, thought-provoking and mature lyrics ("I’ll keep you warm / And I’ll let the fire burn that keeps you warm / We’ll burn this building down with no remorse / You don’t define your children with divorce"), it really missed out being released when it was.

"With this song we tried to lyrically align the beauty and tragedy that lies behind some family relationships," say the band. "Knowing the emotive implications of this message, we were never going to make a video that highlighted the tragedy, but in turn did the complete opposite. We took an old tape recorder, that most people may have used growing up with their families and tried to celebrate the beauty that lies within our own personal family that we call our band."

All dependant on the state of social distancing, Gathering of Strangers are set to provisionally play YALA (You Are Not Alone) Festival in aid of mental health charity Manchester Mind, on November 29, in the city's Northern Quarter.
