Track Of The Day :: MOY - No Talk’s The Best Chat
Words: Richard Cobb
Glasgow-based Kiwi MOY and his band follow-up on their upbeat Metronomy/ Friendly Fires seasoned debut single 'Start Me Up', with their third track, the lockdown penned nu-wave banger ‘No Talk’s The Best Chat.’
Solitary confinement has given countless artists an opportunity to have a flutter in home recording. It’s a tough nut to crack though and the forced climate has produced a bit of a mixed bag along the way with some embracing the challenge and flying high as a result whilst others plunge south like lemmings.
‘No Talk’s The Best Chat', released last week, is a pleasant surprise and belongs very much in the former category. For a home recording there’s an impressive amount of depth here and it seems remarkably well thought-out, so much so that it could have quite easily been mapped-out in one of Glasgow’s high-end studios.
“When you have something new the first thing you want to do is show it to the band and start working out new parts, but we had to approach this differently," says Auckland native MOY, regarding the complex recording process.
"We recorded the basis of the song and layered some sounds before sending it to our drummer and guitarist, both of who set their parts which they recorded with a minimal set-up. It was a strange feeling having their sounds on the song without us all being together."
Judging by their first offerings, there’s something fresh and diverse about MOY. Whilst cited influences Grimes and James Blake are apparent, they’re kept at a safe distance in the wing mirror and the original ideas are sitting comfortably in the driver’s seat.
