Birmingham’s art-punk boys The Novus have hauled out their big guitars for new single, the lockdown demo banger, ‘Man On The Bridge’.
Produced by the indie genius Gavin Monaghan (The Blinders, Editors, The Sherlocks) at Magic Garden Studio, and out today (July 3) on 7" vinyl via Flying Vinyl, The Novus have turned their knack of using everyday events into hard hitting tunes, to the benefit of this latest song, inspired by watching an old guy dancing and throwing some shapes on Camden Lock bridge in North London, while listening to his favourite songs - dressed only in his underpants!
As vocalist Connor Hill slowly sets the scene with “He won’t crack a smile /
he’s living his life and it’s getting him high / again and again", so the atmosphere changes as the guitar riffs push the song into a different direction as the drum-beats kick in around the reverberating vocals.
With its Pistols-eque punky vibes throughout and a song that needs to be seen played live (as it changed my original perception of them), it takes Connor’s last verse to sum up the enjoyment that I’m getting out of this song:
“The man on the bridge is doing a dance / He’s not in a top he’s just in his pants / Sending everybody round him in a trance / And he’s doing it for free just take a picture for me.”
It’s an upbeat, rhythmic track that brings out the dancing feet - even if you're semi-naked!
