With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
SAN MEI - MIDNIGHT

Following recent EP ‘Cry’ and new year starter 'Cherry Days', Queensland singer-songwriter San Mei (Emily Hamilton), unveils a new cut of self-produced dream-pop in ‘Midnight’, with additional production by Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy, Ali Barter, Alex Lahey) and Michael McCartney. The moving homage, beautifully augmented by her soft delivery, to her late mother, is "a celebration and a sweet send-off, and my way of finally saying goodbye. I wrote the chorus lyrics 'go sweetly, out into the night' as a sentiment of letting go, because I decided I didn’t want to keep trying to hold on to something I wasn’t going to get back. The song itself is very special and personal to me, and I think that made it harder to get right, because it had to be right. In the end it became the tribute I wanted it to be, feeling hopeful and reminiscent amidst the feelings of loss.”
SWEATER CURSE - ALL THE SAME
The Brisbane trio return with new track 'All The Same', which comes ahead of their second EP 'push//pull' out on September 25. The punk edged track shows a departure for the band from previous, with distorted guitars lending a heavier swerve. "'All The Same' is about nothing and everything, doing the same things every weekend, going to the same places, seeing the same things and people, but just going with it," explains lead singer Monica Sottile.
DERYK - ONE STAR
Auckland, NZ-based Madeline Bradley- aka deryk - returns with her latest moving track ‘One Star’, following debut single ‘Call You Out’. Ahead of EP ‘WOMb’, out on October 2, this track explores themes of loss and recovery, with deryk’s stirring vocals mapping a path through. “Loss and betrayal can stop time, I swear. The moment you find out it’s like your whole body deflates and while you’re trying to come to terms with it, the rest of your world carries on, judging you for not recovering in two minutes. It can be very isolating, and, in that headspace, I wrote 'One Star'.”
WILL HYDE - MEANT TO BE
Second single from the Melbourne artist, coming on the heels of debut single 'easy for u'. Layering dreamy vocals over electric guitars and synths, with a must-listen chorus, it is, he says, about "thinking you are over someone only to see them and realise you still have a lot of feelings left in that relationship," he says. "I think that that comfort and connection I have with someone never really fades over time. there’s always feelings that I have left with that person that can come back up and make me remember the good times."
IVEY - FALL APART
PINK MATTER - YOU'LL NEVER KNOW
Co-produced with Harvey Sutherland, 'You'll Never Know' is an emboldening story of inner confidence told over a shimmering meeting of soul and disco notes, from the Brisbane three-piece, released last week. "This is a really special song for us. 'You'll Never Know' takes the perspective of a girl talking to her friend, telling her that, although she exudes beauty, she doesn't truly see it within herself. This is a feeling I get with so many of my intelligent and beautiful friends that don't have the inner confidence to see their own beauty. We're hoping that this song will help them (and anyone else feeling that way) to truly see how much everyone adores them!"
