Best new tracks Down Under #42/43

With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.

THE MONEY WAR - BEAUTIFUL YOU

Credit: Dan Beard

Dreamy delight from Perth duo Dylan and Carmen Ollivierre. Following last year's debut album ‘Home’, 'Beautiful You’ is an ode to their feelings meeting their new baby Jack - born in September - for the first time. It precedes their second album, 'Morning People', out on November 20.

SIT DOWN IN FRONT - DON'T PUSH THE BUTTON

We heard the Gisborne, NZ teen punks, led by 16-year-old Cory Newman (who uses a wheelchair due to cerebral palsy), with the feisty 'First World Problems' back in May, now their share a new track from their debut album 'Confessions of a Pie Thief', released back in the summer. Topical and fierce, you see why Cory is being called the NZ Johnny Rotten!

CRY CLUB - DISSOLVE

The Melbourne queer 'bubblegum punk' duo Heather and Jono head up to their Gab Strum-produced debut album 'God I'm Such A Mess', out November 13, with this fan-favourite follow up to 'Nine of Swords'. 'Dissolve’ is described by Heather in a press statement as an “anxiety brain anthem”.

CROCODYLUS - CAMOUFLAGE

The Sydney garage-rock dudes dish out more mosh-pit, headbanging infectious frenzy on this latest cut from their debut album, due out next year.

EILISH GILLIGAN - FLESH

Melbourne singer-songwriter Eilish Gilligan is back with her slowerburner second single of the year, ‘Flesh'. The self-produced track she says is “actually a happy song, or at least it’s the happiest I get. The track arose from someone saying ‘I think about you all the time’."

THE DREGGS - KEEPSAKE

The Dreggs are about to embark on an Australian tour to promote their new ‘Keepsake’ single - out this week. The Brisbane duo Paddy Macrae (vocals, percussion) and Zane Harris (guitar, vocals) build an infectiously melodic alt-pop groove, on the track they describe as "touching on the beauty of vulnerability and the importance of allowing people into our lives, regardless of whether they bring us pain or joy. The act of wearing someone’s heart ‘like a keepsake’ is playing on the idea of wearing a sentimental object, such as a pocket watch or a pendant from a loved one.” Facebook

THE GROGANS - GOT A GIRL

Melbourne-based rock n roll trio The Grogans blend surf-rock, punk, indie with a surfeit of energy on this latest single. The punchy, two minute 'Got A Girl' is prime dance material, layering driving guitar with a catchy, pacing urgency, and comes from new album 'Day/To/Day', out November 13.

CHAII - WOW (LOOK AT ME) Ft. Kings & Lawrence Arabia

Heard this time last year with 'South', Auckland, NZ Persian-Kiwi rapper and producer CHAII now follows her visual EP 'Lightswitch' released earlier this year with 'WOW (Look At Me)'. The co-written collaboration with Kings and Lawrence Arabia, filters glitchy drums and a raft of crashing percussion. “In ‘WOW’ I talk about being in your own lane and taking risks," she says. "The ‘Look at me, wow’ hook is aimed towards social media culture and how some people would do anything to be seen.”
