Doc'n Roll Film Festival returns for 7th London edition in November
Doc'n Roll Film Festival returns for its 7th London edition, to take place live in cinemas and online from November 4 - 15.
The festival will be prefaced with the UK premiere of the much-anticipated film documentary on the Thin Lizzy frontman: Phil Lynott: Songs for While I’m Away. The cinematic portrait of the life and times will be shown as a live screening, featuring a Q&A with director Emer Reynolds, and will take place at Alexandra Palace Theatre on October 24 at 5pm.
Doc’n Roll LDN 2020 aims to offer a cinematic window on a multitude of music-makers, genres, stories and scenes, via the talents of filmmakers ranging from first-time directors to justly acclaimed veterans. A diverse and dazzling lineup of 27 documentaries will take viewers around the world, from experimental electronica to Iranian metal via Ibizan odysseys and IDLES’ passionate intensity; from Washington DC punk to the beating heart of jazz, via the creative worlds of Parisian pop auteur Sebastien Tellier and North African-French icon Rachid Taha; and from avant-garde heroines’ fearless soundscapes to a director’s seemingly impossible quest to capture elusive art-rockers Talk Talk on celluloid.
Featuring eight world premieres, four UK and two London premieres, plus fourteen online premieres, along with filmmaker and artist Q&As and an extra special live music event, Doc’n Roll London 2020 will launch on November 4 at BFI Southbank. The festival’s opening night will feature the world premiere of Don’t Let The Devil Take Another Day, an honest and moving look at the career and creative drive of Kelly Jones of Stereophonics.
Doc’n Roll CEO Vanessa Lobon Garcia says: “Music and film have been essential therapy for many people during the difficult times we’ve all experienced in 2020. For our 7th edition of Doc’n Roll, we want to acknowledge and celebrate the importance and relevance of the arts, and put the work of the creative community front and centre."
Six of the films premiering at Doc’n Roll LDN 2020 have been shortlisted for Doc’n Roll’s Best Music Documentary 2020 award. They will be judged by a jury panel made up of broadcaster John Kennedy (Radio X), Mandy Chang (Commissioning Editor, BBC Storyville), music journalist Susan Hansen and presenter/journalist Kylie Olsson.
The films in competition for the 2020 jury prize are: Don’t Let The Devil Take Another Day (Kelly Jones); Don’t Go Gentle: A Film About IDLES; Sebastien Tellier: Many Lives; Sisters With Transistors; Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away; and Other, Like Me.
