Track Of The Day :: The Lathums - I See Your Ghost

Words: Ellie Ward

Released last Friday, The Lathums are back with with a ska-infused skip into autumn with new single 'I See Your Ghost'.

Marking a departure for the Wigan band, the track - the first cut from their forthcoming EP, 'Ghosts' - sees them move away from their jangle-pop bops, and step into ska-rigged scat territory.

Produced by James Skelly, the bouncing vibe of 'I See Your Ghost' is a Specials-styled  two-and-a-half minutes packing heavy bass, fast-paced guitar, choral breaks, and frontman, songwriter and chief groover Alex Moore getting his tongue around some speedy word deliveries.

“There’s something inside me, maybe like everyone, that ticks to the beats of reggae, ska, grime or hip-hop," explains Moore, whose lyrics deal with the enduring presence of the physically departed. "A natural, human swing you hear in the music that, even without the tune, still exists. It’s how your heart ticks. ‘I See Your Ghost’ is that feeling for me.”

The single follows the announcement that they will cut just one, 7” copy of their cover of Northern Soul classic, 'The Snake', with owning the one-off record being the only chance of ever hearing it. Ticket holders in an online raffle to grab the vinyl have already raised over £3,000 to support the fan-led fund to save Wigan Athletic.
