The Academic get festive with a cover of 'Lonely This Christmas' plus a livestream show in December

Words: Izzy Butler

With lockdowns, self-isolation and social distancing abounding, there may not be a lot of Christmas spirit in the offing yet. But with just over five weeks until Santa and his reindeer don their face masks and set off to mingle in bubbles around the globe, delivering presents galore, The Academic are kicking things off with a lovely cover of 'Lonely This Christmas'.

And what's more, they are bringing a little bit of the Irish craic with a livestream show from the grounds of Belvedere House & Gardens on December 1. This one off and unique outdoor show will be broadcast from one of Ireland’s oldest ‘sham-ruins’, The Jealous Wall, which is on the shores of Lough Ennell.

"It’s been a really tough year for everybody in our industry. All we have known for the past couple of years is getting in a van or a bus or getting on a plane to play a show somewhere, and to have that massive void now it really does start to hit home how much we love what we do," says vocalist Craig Fitzgerald.

“When we talked about the idea of performing a live show with no audience and in the context of streaming we knew we had to make it something unique and special so when the idea to play at The Jealous Wall came up we were really excited by it.

"It also gives us an opportunity to get a lot of people back to work including our crew who have been hit harder than most this year."
