Mad Love For Cheval Sombre
Christopher Porpora is a singer/songwriter/poet from New York. Better known as Cheval Sombre, his new album 'Mad Love' drops today (October 29) and a thing of rare beauty it is too - and that's not referring to just the limited-edition heavyweight crystal clear vinyl (with download card) that it comes as (as well as a digital download).
Co-produced by Sonic Boom and featuring guest appearances by Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500, Luna), Britta Phillips (Luna, The Belltower), Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser of MGMT, and Sonic Boom himself, 'Mad Love' is an apt title for what can be assured many listeners will feel for it upon hearing.
It comes wrapped in Sharon Lock's beautiful and mysterious artwork which was inspired by the letters of Emma Hauck, a schizophrenic whose series of heartbreaking missives to her husband were found at a German asylum following her death. Each had the same phrase repeated time and again: “Sweetheart come”. With all of this attention to detail, 'Mad Love' has truly been made with love.
Love, pain and the whole damn thing twisted with folkesque melancholia, 'Mad Love' is a work for lonely late night bedroom listening, while dissecting all those relationship woes.
Cheval Sombre is quite possibly the new Leonard Cohen.
To follow the album release he will play a one-off live show at St Pancras Old Church in London on November 22, accompanied by Sonic Boom.
Listen to opening track and forthcoming single 'Someplace Else'.
