Album Review :: Boardwalk - Boardwalk
Boardwalk
Boardwalk
October 14 2013 (Stones Throw)
6.5/10
Words: Alison Mack
Dreamy, lo-fi, ghostly pop....hmmm, both style and feel of this album from the LA duo reminds a little of Moon King's latest: lovely for a late-night wallow, but all very much-of-a-muchness with nothing to really elevate it or to differentiate one track from another.
The songs like 'I’m To Blame’ revolve around fragile relationships which perfectly suits Amber Quintero's wistful vocals, and 'I'm Not Myself' - perhaps the highlight of the ten tracks - is a haunting track about the delusions of relationships, which encompasses a nice touch of reverb. 'Crying', in a similar vein, plays to its charms and accomplishments on guitar from Mike Edge, whilst tracks such as 'Keep The Wolf' and 'Oh Well' offer glimpses of melodic beauty.
This self-titled debut is probably the ideal accompaniment for a dinner party, or at least as background music whilst engaged in something else. Boardwalk feels, both as band and album, like a work still in progress.
