EP Review :: Bedfellows - World Apart

Bedfellows

World Apart

6.5/10

Words: Alison Mack

Describing themselves with the 'post-punk' tag feels something of a misnomer for this Brooklyn trio (which includes Justin Vassallo, formerly of dance-pop combo Technoir MA), whose sound would appear to be more firmly fixed in the 'dance/synth' category than displaying any semblance of punkishness. This five-track debut bears the hallmarks of drum machine and analog synth primarily, with guitar and (tremulous, at times) vocal of Vassallo.

In the main, 'World Apart' offers what one might expect: plenty of bouncy rhythms and catchy melodies. 'Coming Up' and 'As She Whispers' snap, crackle and pop with hand-clappy, synth-propelled elements, whilst 'Receiver' hits the.guitar riffs, drum machine hi-hat beats with a snugly fitting synth overlay.

But in this case it is the closing track 'Range Of Love' that is possibly the highpoint of the EP. By far the strongest and most attention-grabbing; less dancefloor, more innovative touches, differing key changes and appeaL that mark it out. In essence, Bedfellows have made a fine start, but perhaps still in need of determining their direction.
