The Watchmakers

Illumination/Carpe Diem

June 12 2014 (Loaded Soul Records)

8/10

Words: Leanne Crowley

Manchester-based four-piece The Watchmakers, who combine 60s psychedelia with their own unique blend of rock and roll, have previously only released self-produced demos. ‘Before Questions Became' and ‘Waves' saw them praised highly by John Kennedy of Xfm and also saw them feature at a BBC Introducing live showcase.

Following headline shows at key psych showcases in Manchester (as well as rightfully earning support slots for the likes of Jacco Gardner and Dark Bells), The Watchmakers now release two new tracks - ‘Illumination' and its accompanying B-side, ‘Carpe Diem'. The songs are the first release from the Manchester-based label Loaded Soul Records and are available on a limited edition vinyl as well as digital download.

‘Illumination' offers a fast-paced opening with swirling guitars which almost appear random in their sound, until the strong drum beat takes control of the track and the additional synth elements add structure. Vocals from lead Rich Maitland draw the listener ever deeper and the curiosity is certainly piqued by this point. Backing vocals are interspersed for additional emphasise - the fuzz guitar sounds, persistent bass line with a sprinkling of synth coating are the key to the sound produced. The ever pounding drums fill the track with energy and this radiates outwards. Vocals return to finalise the track and based on the feeling left after listening to this track recorded, it is easy to see why The Watchmakers are a success live.

‘Carpe Diem' is an entirely different beast; jangly tambourines and pounding drums open with guitars fading in and out. Repetition is the key here and The Watchmakers utilise it magnificently. Heavily disguised vocals swirl and swoosh with the ups and downs of the guitar riffs whilst playing effectively with reverb. The mixing on this track has been done to such precision that the sounds are perfectly balanced; all elements competing for attention simultaneously. Shoegaze elements prevail here and yet the song still offers a distinctly psych feel. This track explores sound with beautiful and breath-taking results. Play loud to truly appreciate the elements within.
