Track Of The Day :: Tipare - Backbiters

Sometimes you get press releases on artists that are so crammed with information (most unwanted and unnecessary) that you can barely assimilate it all. At other times you receive hardly any details - as is the case with this New Zealand singer Tipare.

It would appear 'Backbiters' is her debut. It's fairly hard-hitting, and the release that came with the track referred to "the upheaval within her family from 'The Operation 8' terror raids that partly inspired Tipare’s new single". Now this may mean something to New Zealanders, but does it to those outside of the territory? It sounds like Tipare has a full backstory, but we glean little about her or her influences.

Research identifies 'Operation 8' as being the series of armed police arrests conducted in 2007 after the discovery of an alleged paramilitary training camp in the Urewera mountain range near the town of Ruatoki in New Zealand.

'Backbiters', we are informed, is "a song that showcases Tipare’s fierce nature, as she pokes the stick at the peddlers of judgment and gossip". We would like to have known more about this and just what went on, but in the absence of, this is an electro dance track with a soulful edge from the Auckland-based Tipare. Interesting arrangement that lifts it above the usual and sticks in your head.
