8/10
Words: Alison Mack
Digital synth funk duo J and T (Tom McFarland and Joshua Lloyd-Watson, from London's Shepherd’s Bush; once of the indie band Born Blonde) made their entrance via videos for ‘Platoon’ and ‘The Heat’ that featured breakdancing kids and synchronised rollerskaters, and created a sound that dipped, dived and tasted the nectar of a variety of genres from the great and the good, via a few of the naff, from Prince to Portishead, and roped it all into a dancefloor daze.
Thought your funking days were over? The likes of 'The Heat', filled with sirens and organs, the illuminating 'Time', the throbbing bassline and synths of 'Platoon', along with the irresistible horns in 'Busy Earnin' should see you getting your mojo back in its place with this effervescent futuristic driving electro pace of summer shimmery afro-funk. From the trip-hop of 'Julia' to the Tears For Fears-alike 'Accelerate', the preciseness of all elements show why Jungle have achieved such overwhelming praise both at home and abroad. The grooves are deep, rich, and ultimately slinkily cool, making for one fine first album debut.
