July 25 2014 - Hot Top Ten
GIRL BAND - DE BOM BOM
A visceral three minutes of propulsive, rhythmic noise from the Dublin four, out September 1 via Any Other City. Not only did they write and record it, but produced and mixed it themselves too. There's multi-tasking.
THE MERCY BEAT - SWEET
Former frontman with The Bravery, Sam Endicott, leads new LA-based outfit with self-titled debut getting UK release on September 1 via French label Oskar. Aptly titled track, dripping with synths and falsetto harmonies.
TABLE SCRAPS - BUG
Birmingham drum n guitar duo Scott Vincent Abbott and Poppy Twist release this 90 seconds of energy fuzz debut on August 11 via their own Hell's Teeth label.
HUMBUG - SAD EYES
Four Essex lads from Southend, still all in their late teens. This is the third demo they have put out and as with their earlier work they strike some sharp guitar lines, and vocalist Ben Rotherham always manages to provide a heartache vocal.
TRANSISTORS - PROFESSIONAL
Kiwi band who we had a listen to last weekend here and brought back as it may be winter currently in NZ, but across this side if the ocean they're sounding pretty hot. And this is a fun vid to boot.
BORLAND - BLACK CAT
An almost seven-minute cut of dark and symphonic electronica from the mini-album 'Omar 1' which came out this week by the Manchester-based duo - Rob Gregg and Ian Breen. Judging by this, we will be hearing much more of this pair, in a big way.
NUDE BEACH - I CAN'T KEEP THE TEARS FROM FALLING
Don't be fooled by the title, this is no weepy but a full on punch of power pop from the Brooklyn three-piece, taken from '77', released on October 21 thru Don Giovanni Records.
PRELOW - MISTAKES LIKE THIS
We shall say no more than these are a pair of 22-year-old New Yorkers, Matt Walsh and Jesse Aicher; the track has had over 180,000 plays so far; oh, and the chorus lyrics are: "And my dick takes over / And I'm thinking about your lips / But we're too damn sober / For mistakes like this." Say no more...though looking at the picture here, why does David Beckham spring to mind...?
DUMB - STILL I'M STUCK
Lead track from the Brumsters' - who we first featured here over a year ago - forthcoming EP 'Chew Me Up, Spit Me Out', released on 12" vinyl and DL on August 18. Still edgy, still watchable. And no chickens were harmed in the making of this song.
PHANTOM RUNNERS - ON THE RUN
A former Track Of The Day with their last single, the Brighton outfit return with this latest - once again produced by Huey Morgan, and drops on August 22.
