This particular 'Track Of The Day' has been ready and primed for a week to go as soon as word was given that ‘Twin’, the debut single from Brighton-based songwriting and production duo Oslo Parks, was ready to be set live.
And after a week of listening to 'Twin', we decided not only do we like the track very much, but we very much like the vocalist too - whoever he is. The latest wheeze by PRs and bands all of a sudden seems to be playing the mystery game and keeping the artist's identity undercover. In the case of Oslo Parks we think we have liked those vocals before somewhere, as there is something to timbre that is oh, so familiar, oh yes...However, with little being given away about this pair, the only things we know for definite are that they are neither Norwegian or employees of the local Brighton council parks and recreation committee.
'Twin' has now dropped today online (July 15) and gets its official release on August 25 via London tastemaker label X Novo (putting this out as their second release following on from Phoria’s ‘Display’ EP).
The Parks have described their sound as ‘layered vocals over a mixture of live and electronic instrumentation – pop writing in an alternative setting', which pretty much fits the bill here. ‘Twin’ was the first track the duo wrote and produced together, ans conceptually explores the idea of having a digital twin or the persona one creates for oneself online. It could be just us, but the opening notes immediately bring George Michael to mind, circa 'Faith' era; definitely an early 90s indie dance groove going on there, with a loose disco funk/r n b vibe, yet still managing to sound fresh and strong enough in today's market alongside the likes of Metronomy.
Remixes will follow from Canadian producer Tep No and Dutch producer Layzie. Also watch out for the video for ‘Twin’ which has been worked on by label mate, Phoria guitarist and filmmaker Jeb Hardwick.
