New Up From Down Under :: Australia's Latest Indie Releases
Strewth, hardly a day goes by it seems without yet another bunch of indie cobbers from Down Under nestling in our pile of new releases. So, in support of our Australian cousins, we offer a round-up of a few of the best.
Angus & Julia
Releasing their new full-length album 'Angus & Julia Stone' last week via American Recordings, the Rick Rubin produced album has already topped the charts in France and Australia. Check out the video for single 'A Heartbreak' below. The siblings play a coast-to-coast US tour in October. See their website for more.
Young Maverick
Melbourne's Young Maverick could be the new kings of tropical, feel-good pop given half the chance. New EP 'Holiday Popular' is filled with uplifting hooks and energetic excuses to, well, bounce. Take a listen to new single 'Hey Woo' which follows on from 'Running Around' that organically pricked the ear of the likes of Zan Rowe on Triple J. There's plenty on offer throughout: the snazzy riff, the heart-wrenching lyrics, the infectious chorus.
Foxsmith
On the back of their first single ‘Wake Up’ last year, Brisbane band Foxsmith take a darker twist with their second single 'Pentimento', which is out on September 1. Recorded and mixed by producer Yanto Browning (The Medics, Tara Simmons, The Jungle Giants), this second offering from the four-piece is laden with lush melodies, beginning quite intimately before snapping into catchy guitar and synth hooks. Stirring yet comforting, 'Pentimento' explores existentialism and follows the bands new direction into darker, shimmering soundscapes and grooves.
Jacobide
Sydney indie rockers, Jacobide release their new single 'More Than Kings' on August 15 via Pavement Records. 'More Than Kings' delivers a unique sound created by the four members of Jacobide. The three-‐minute track balances raw emotive vocals with clean, engaging guitar tones, clever bass lines and melodic beats.
Harts
Third single 'Angels Walk Below' from Melbourne funkateer Harts - shi has recently spent time jamming with Prince, no less, at Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis after a personal invitation from the man himself.
Polarheart
Sydney dream-pop duo Polarheart - Mary Rose and Chris Chidiac - formed early last year when the classically
trained pair teamed up to produce recent debut single 'Paralyse', a melancholic ballad of layered vocals and lush synths. Check out the newly released video below.
