Listen Up :: New from Australia #8
The latest bulletin of the best from Down Under.
THE FIENNES
Sydney brothers Mark and Andrew Garai comprise alt rock duo The Fiennes who got together musically in late 2013, with Andrew joining as drummer for the band founded by Mark, who had already established a limited release EP for The Fiennes, with a video for one the tracks, 'Keep Calm', being featured on Coldplay’s website 'Hypnofeed'. Drawing on influences from Britrock, the track 'Doubt' filled with chiming guitar riffs and grandiose drums, anchored by a swirling lead acoustic line and an emotional vocal, is set for release on October 17.
ANIMAL HOUSE
These former Brisbane habitants now uprooted and on British, settled in Brighton, are set to wake up the old country with their raucous garage rock sound by unleashing their debut single ‘Sour’ on October 20. Taking in the chaos of The Growlers, the precision of The White Stripes and a volatile excitement that echoes Youth and Young Manhood era Kings of Leon, the first outing from this four-piece is an impressive one.
ESSICK
Emerging from Brisbane’s fertile music scene, Essick’s 11-track debut album is full of simple yet effective hooks, tight, complex drum patterns, synthesised electronic flourishes and intricate guitar lines. Musicians Ravi Das and Andrew MacDougall spent five days in late 2013 working with producer Steve Kempnich, and enlisting Brock Weston to replace most drum machines with his swift snare rolls and powerful tom whacks, bringing added energy and attitude to each song, plus two synthesisers and countless guitars to fill in the sound. In November 2013, less than a month after the album’s completion, Ravi Das died in a drowning accident. A promise was made to Ravi’s family that his music would be released for the world to hear. Essick’s first single ‘Ghost Towns' is described as sounding like "a mongrelised version of James Blake and Deep Sea Arcade on dexamphetamines."
UNCLE BOBBY
17-year-old Robert Downie, or Uncle Bobby - or even Robulus, as he was formerly known as - is something of a chillwave wunderkind, creating hazy psychedelic/electronic sounds, not to mention being a multi-instrumentalisti: guitar, synths, trombone, bass. He sings too. His debut album 'Flick My Switch' came out in August via Bandcamp and 'In The Sun' is the lead track.
WIVES
Buried', the debut single from Australia's experimental garage post-punk outfit Wives, is four minutes of aural noise that will either have you leaping from the rooftop, or exclaiming it's the best thing thing you've heard all year. Formerly known as Sweet Shoppe - and comprising members of TV Colours, Sex Noises, Assassins 88 and Beach Slut - the Canberra four-piece have recently released 'Buried' as their debut under the new name. It's Anja Loughhead's (Sex Noises) eccentric vocal component that defines the band, working as an interesting adjunct to the drone riffs; gradually building with some nifty little touches thrown in that take you by surprise - as does the end. WIVES have just finished recording their debut album, due out early next year.
GL
GL are a new synth-pop duo hailing from Melbourne. Now about to set their sparkling synths, gritty drum-machines, and lush vocals on the British public as the pair - Graeme
Pogson and Ella Thompson, formerly together as part of the soul/funk band The Bamboos - give a taste of their self-titled debut EP with the bittersweet ‘What Happened To Us?' A sound which sits somewhere between Chairlift and Washed Out, with 80s atmospherics, and Thompson's cool vocals providing the slowjam funk with style. GL’s EP is out on October 6 on Sydney label Plastic World.
