Introducing :: Balloon Assembly Line
The self-titled three-track debut album released in September 2013 by Georgia (the American state, not the country) residents Balloon Assembly Line gave an inkling perhaps of their love of somewhat unusual song titles with 'People Are My Favorite Animal'. Followed by singles, 'Human Chandelier' in May, and 'Dramatic Teleportation Boy' in August of this year.
Between the latter two they worked in the four-track 'Aerosol Fumes' EP with the likes of such classics as 'Norepinepherine Reuptake Inhibitors' and 'Sad Night at the Frozen Yogurt Establishment'. The EP has now just been released digitally last week - hence why we are talking about it now, and not just sniggering over the names.
The project started two years ago, explains vocalist Kelby Clark, "as my solo project, and we formed as a full/live band about a year-and-a-half ago. We self-record all of our music in my grandma's attic."
And those titles? "We get the song names from inside jokes and obscure things we learn/experience, but mostly inside jokes," enlightens Kelby, seriously.
It's hard to know where or how to categorize Balloon Assembly Line, although they certainly have a listenable quality to their work, and you can imagine live they would really get a crowd on its feet. Dark indie experimental rock, with a smattering of math/surf and a wry way with words (take these on 'Drowning' from 'Aerosol Fumes': "Telling a lie till it becomes the truth/You'd be an interesting candidate for an invisible man/inside of a phone booth/while drowning in the fountain of youth." would perhaps be a start.
Plans are for a further EP early next year. We can't wait to see the song titles on that one.
