Tristan Irvine, who records under the name Joy Surrender, may be a new artist to get to know, but one we think you will. After writing and developing his solo project over the last year, he now unveils his debut single 'Escape'.
"I like to label my music as 'orchestronica', says the 25-year-old, Hampshire-based songwriter / producer. "But in more general terms, it relates to genres such as dream pop and chamber pop."
Having started out as a composer and producer of instrumental music (under the name Fragments Of Winter), "a couple of years ago I joined an experimental choir based in London called ‘Conversations with Sound’, which really helped me with discovering and developing my voice. That also led, eventually, to start writing songs with lyrics and Joy Surrender was born."
‘Escape', is a slow-building, shimmering lament, just short of five minutes that charts, "a transition in life, that specific moment in time when somebody is trying to leave the past behind (struggling) and moving on into a future that seems very uncertain". As it gets underway on the strains of its chiming piano opening to combine with Irvine's frangible vocal, we are led into its build-up by way of introducing pounding electronic beats, and for the last two minutes realising a big cinematic sweep of orchestrated sound to its end, before the last notes gradually fade away like the dying light of a candle flame.
It might be early days but judging by 'Escape', and the two earlier uploaded tracks - 'S.O.S.', 'Prism' - Irvine's metier lies in creating these kind of sparse, airy sound palettes that resonate with the listener. We wait to hear more.
