Introduced here back in July, the Norwich-based eight-piece collective Real Life Charm are now back with 'Holbein', their fourth single release (plus EP 'What Ever Happened To Real Life Charm').
A jangly little affair, 'Holbein' perhaps best shows how RLC have drawn comparisons to Alt-J and certainly has its own charm. The song melds together beautifully laced guitar riffs, understated synth pads, electronic drums and Tim Hyland's vocals playing over a catchy beat.
As well, as the sound stream, also take a look at the video below put together by Tim, who describes its making:
"I shot the video in my bedroom, with nobody else but me, which was extremely difficult. It involved a mattress, me falling over a lot, me getting focus via a carefully placed mirror and a red wall in my bedroom."
Typically with Real Life Charm, there is always more to their songs than might meet the ear, despite their often light approach, as Tim reveals the idea behind 'Holbein'.
"The concept is following my journey around America which I did from November last year to February this year. During my stay I hung out with my great-aunt for a few days in the mountains of Colorado. She's a psychic and she told me during a reading that me and Adam (our illustrator) had worked together in many past lives. She said he died during the plague after achieving great success as an illustrator and painter in the northern Renaissance period. As it happens, Holbein also died during the same era. It's basically a song about the plague and the Great Fire of London...As you do."
