Listen :: August Wells - Here In The Wild
Released last month via FIFA Records, ‘Here in the Wild’ is an elegant five minutes of lustrous music by Dubliner Ken Griffin (Rollerskate Skinny, Kid Silver, Favourite Sons) and pianist John Rauchenberger, with their new New York-based (where Griffin has resided for the last two decades) band August Wells.
An intelligent alt-pop/folk piano and string-led track that incorporates sweeping strings, chatoyant piano and a semi-jazz fusion, along with Wells’ smokey croon that emits a certain introspection and weariness in delivery: “Don’t you find it all such a bore/People like us don’t exist anymore/We're invisible now/Sweet heart we're free/Here in the wild”.
There's a touch of Tom Hickox here in the storytelling and melancholic lines, and evidence why Griffin is something of a renowned name in Irish music circles.
