Track Of The Day :: Nots - Virgin Mary

Words: Alison Mack

Some serious business going on here by the four Memphis garage-rock girls Nots.

'Virgin Mary' (b/w 'Shelf Life'), out on June 23 via Goner Records, is the single follow-up to Nots' - Natalie Hoffmann, Charlotte Watson, Madison Farmer, and Alexandra Eastburn - debut LP, 'We Are Nots', released last November.

Recorded half on Hoffmann's 4-track in the band's industrial storage unit where they practise, and half in Burgundy Studios with Keith Cooper, 'Virgin Mary' is an abrasive four minutes that's part Riot Grrrl, part Savages. The opening 90 seconds of the hypnotic drone rhythm that continues throughout, sets the scene for the emergence of Eastburn's sharp sonic synth, and an insistent bass riff from Farmer, that along with Hoffmann's pummeling vocal delivery, make for one helluva raw ride.
