Introducing :: Dazy Chain
Words: Ellie Ward
The EP debut - out on June 19 - by Surrey three-piece Dazy Chain contains track visuals that are so swirly and soothing that they belie the work's title 'Bloodbath' somewhat.
And not only that, but with three of the song titles giving a vehement nod towards this being definitely a harsh-and-hard metal band, when you actually hear the tracks they come as something of a surprise.
Fronted by 18-year-old Saagar Kaushik on vocals/guitar - with Tom Reeves, also 18, on bass/synth, and Will Reddy, 17, drums - they originally started out as a duo between Kaushik and Reeves, then after getting Will in to record drums on some early demos, they then embarked on life as a threesome. Gigging since November, they have already played with the likes of Best Friends, Allusondrugs, and Misty Miller.
On the four-track debut EP, we have 'I Don't Care' which works on a straightforward melodic indie line, building up gradually with Kaushik snapping out the catchy buzz line, "I don’t care but I just don’t get it...". The title track 'Bloodbath' weaves around a punctuated synth line, although never really firing up much energy to become a literal bloodbath of sound until the fuzzy guitars echo in sonic atmospherics in the dying seconds.
In comparison, lead single 'Gunfire', released last month, takes on a sturdier refrain to the previous two, with big drums and guitar-fuelled passion in delivery. 'Nucleic Acid Trip', one of the first songs that the band wrote, moves back more into synth pop territory, as its lyrics enquire: "Are you tripping? You’re enough to get me high".
There are some pleasing elements to Dazy Chain, fusing energy and with DIY ethic, punk spirit, and wry lyrics; and with a little more experience and focus in the direction they intend to take, they could be on to something.
Dazy Chain play an EP release show at The Boileroom, Guildford on June 19.
